Sonic Unleashed’s gameplay, as a whole, worked very well.
#SONIC UNLEASHED REVIEW FULL#
What we were promised was a game that would take full advantage of Sonic’s speed a fast-paced game that would reward studying the level design, uncovering shortcuts and finding a way to advance through the stages at max speed for better ranks and time. Neither did Sonic Heroes work, and Sonic 2006…well the less said about that, the better. Its main aim was to try to reinvent how Sonic functioned in 3D, mostly because neither Sonic Adventure 1 or Sonic Adventure 2 worked.

Sonic Unleashed is a 3D Platformer game that was released way back when in November 2008. Of course, we now know none of this is true, but oh how we wanted to believe back before the game was released… The one that had no new friends taking up the precious gameplay from the titular blue hedgehog. You know, the game that would return Sonic to its roots, and all those other buzzwords people use to try to bring life to a dead series that continues to under-perform. Well, Sonic Unleashed was originally going to be the Sonic game. You may be thinking what this has to do with Sonic Unleashed. The first game in question, Sonic Adventure 2 didn’t fare well at all, and don’t even get me started on how the next game Sonic Heroes turned out. This of course led to the downfall of the entire series, as the other playable characters (Amy, Tails, Knuckles, Omega, Big the Cat) managed to bring nothing more than absolutely inexcusable slogs of new gameplay-types. Sonic Adventure 1 was a bad game that proved that playing as Sonic alone would result in an extremely short game with little to no replay value, so to counter this they decided to start adding more playable characters.

However, when gaming moved into 3D, it just left Sonic behind. Sonic used to be a platformer that rivaled the greatest Mario games ever made back during the SNES days. Sonic is past his prime, there’s no arguing that. What the hell happened to you, Sonic? Feel free to stop reading because I think we know where this is going.
